A New Cavity Fighting Liquid to Brush Kids Cavities Away

That’s right! Fight cavities in kids teeth with a new brushed on cavity-fighting liquid. Read on to learn more information on this new alternative for cavity fighting.

It’s no secret that not many people look forward to going to the dentist. Many of which, being kids. Who wants to have an injection to numb the tooth area and then have their tooth drilled and filled. No one! Now there is a quick and painless alternative!

So What is it?

Silver Diamine Fluoride, or SDF, is an antimicrobial liquid that is brushed on the cavities in kids teeth. It stops the decay without causing any pain or discomfort. And most importantly, no trauma for kids!

This formula became available in the United States a year ago under the name Advantage Arrest but has been used for decades in Japan.

The FDA has approved SDF as a tooth desensitizer for adults 21 years old and older. But,  dentists studies has shown that this new treatment can prevent cavities and even halts the progression of them.

The Good News

Hundreds of dental practices and dental schools are already using this treatment! Dr. Richard Niederman, the chairman of epidemiology and health promotion department at New York University College of Dentistry, said, “Being able to paint it on in 30 seconds with no noise, no drilling, is better, faster, cheaper.”

Parents are encouraged to ask their pediatric dentists about SDF for fighting cavities in kids teeth. It’s the least traumatic option for your kids!

The Bad News

Silver Diamine Fluoride blackens the decay of the tooth. Should the cavity be on a baby tooth, that will fall out, or a back molar, no worries. However, most people would contemplate putting it on a front tooth.

In addition, SDF is not currently covered by insurance, so patients are left to foot the bill. Luckily, it is a rather inexpensive treatment compared to  traditional treatment.

All in all, SDF is getting a ton of praise from patients and practices alike in fighting cavities in kids teeth!
